Conference Description
This conference is designed to examine the evolving process of preparing the most competent, professional nurses. Presentations, panels, participant dialogue, and case exemplars will be used to guide an in-depth examination of many elements involving competency such as:
- IOM Competencies
- Carnegie Study’s Apprenticeships for Nursing
- The Institute of Medicine’s Competencies for Professional Practice
- Emerging Policy Issues Related to Competence of Professional Nurses
At the completion of the conference participants will be able to develop and review critical issues influencing education and ongoing assessment of professional nursing competencies, thus creating a shared vision for continued competence in nursing.
Objectives
- Examine the findings of the Carnegie study as a foundation for teaching and assessing professional competencies
- Compare various approaches to incorporating IOM competencies in nursing curriculum
- Evaluate the impact of emerging health and regulatory policies on the process of continuous competency assessment
- Differentiate competencies for professional nurses based on the educational level and career stages
- Develop a framework for assessing ongoing competencies of professional nurses
- Analyze selected approaches for assessing professional competencies in health care settings
