About the Grant

With the current faculty shortage and expanding enrollments, there are few resources available for the student who needs focused assistance in academics and/or balancing school with the demands of his/her personal life. Regionalized resources and stronger communication of successful retention strategies will increase graduation rates in West Texas. Many schools begin the academic year with admission slots available for a variety of reasons.

Regionalizing the application process will allow the communication needed to fill every available student slot in the consortium and decrease the duplication of admission activities by each individual school.

The proposed West Texas Nursing Education Portal Project (WTNEPP) will improve the nursing workforce by suggesting a more comprehensive and longer lasting solution, one of "growing our own" nurses, especially in rural areas. If there are jobs available, people tend to stay in the area where they live. This will occur by increasing the infusion of well qualified nurses.

Project Scope

The specific scope of this project is to standardize the application process for West Texas Nursing Education Consortium schools in assessment tracking and retention of "at risk" students.

Goals

The WTNEC proposes to increase graduation rates at each of the participating institutions to 85% through the following partnership goals:

  1. Develop a central application portal for regionalizing the application process for WTNEC Nursing programs and
  2. Develop a Regional Retention Initiative (RRI) to increase graduation rates for "at risk' students.

Objectives

WTNEC will accomplish the following:

  1. Allow all applicants the opportunity to apply to WTNEC Programs through a central portal for the convenience of matching admission to the student's top three WTNEC program choices.
  2. Develop a centralized admission database to,
    1. record and project applicant numbers,
    2. pool demographic data of applicants applying to WTNEC programs, and
    3. track applicants following selection by first, second or third choice for program placement
  3. Develop a central retention portal for WTNEC access to student retention materials.
